Why Piano Teachers Need to Prepare Now for “Do or Die” Season

While it may seem odd to be talking about New Year resolutions in November, for piano teachers the time for making resolutions is now!

When January comes along, you want to hit the ground running… which is why you want to start planning your changes in November. If you wait until January to brainstorm new and innovative piano studio ideas, it will be mid-February before these changes are effectively implemented. By this time, you will have burned some valuable word-of-mouth opportunities as new students love to sign up during the first two months of the new year.

January to April is “Do or Die” Season

If there is ever a time to make changes January is it. I often refer to the time period between January and April as “Do or Die” season. This is the time of year when you can lose, retain, or even gain new students for the following September.

You see, between September and December everything in the piano teaching world is new and fresh. You are meeting new students, building relationships, laying musical foundations, and preparing for winter recitals.

And then January hits!

By this time, piano lessons have become routine. And you all know how I hate the word “routine”. Because when piano lessons become routine, kids get bored. And when kids get bored, there is a good chance they won’t re-register for piano lessons the following year.

Of course, if you’ve made your piano teaching resolutions in November, when January hits, your piano students will be inundated with new and exciting piano teaching activities. All of a sudden piano lessons are fresh again! And when re-registration time arrives, your studio is jam-packed months before school even starts up again.
