Think you could teach your piano students to play the rainbow? Neil could…
Until he entered university, Neil Harbisson could only see the world in shades of grey. Diagnosed with achromtopsia at the age of 11, he was completely color blind.
But now, Neil perceives the world in all of its colorful glory. In fact, he can now perceive colors in the infrared spectrum… beyond what the normal human eye can see.
How Is This Possible?
Neil does not “see” colors, he hears them! Thanks to a chance meeting in university with Adam Montandon, he is now equipped with a device that sees colors for him, converts the colors to sound, and transmits the sound to his brain.
Notes on the Staff Become Colors on the Staff
Thanks to Montandon’s invention, colors now correspond to musical notes. Red, for instance, sounds like an F, while blue sounds like a C. And now, as Neil walks down the street his robotic eye is filling him in aurally on the colorful world around him. What Does Prince Charles Face Sound Like?
In a report on the BBC, the news site explains how Prince Charles once met Neil and asked him about the device that Neil was wearing on his head. Neil explained its purpose and asked Prince Charles if he could “hear” his face. The aural results, along with the sounds of other celebrity faces are displayed in the video below.
Does anyone else think Nicole Kidman’s face stood out from the rest?
