How lazy have we become?
Instead of pushing a mower, we ride on a machine.
Instead of working for a million dollars, we try to win a million dollars.
Instead of rolling down a car window, we push a little black button.
Instead of playing new music, we download a new tune and listen to new music…
But that’s about to change…
Multi-platinum selling artist, Beck, is releasing his newest “album” as sheet music only. That’s right, no iTunes, no CDs, no Top 40 Radio… simply sheet music.
And It’s Not For the Money
At least I assume it’s not for money. Certainly shunning radio and album sales for sheet music has got to hurt the bottom line. According to his website, Beck is releasing his new tunes as sheet music because in his words, “bringing the songs to life depends on you”.
YES! YES! YES!
That’s exactly what piano teachers have known for years. It is much more meaningful to play music than to simply listen to music. And now we have a major celebrity endorsing this philosophy. Not just endorsing… but forcing!
And maybe that’s what everyone needs… a little “star power” motivation to get them off the couch and into our piano studios.
At TeachPianoToday.com we have our own rockstar… his name is Fearless Fortissimo. And kids just love to bring his music to life. If you need to inspire, check out our piano book series.

This is absolutely thrilling. Seriously, I had goosebumps. Can’t wait to share this with my students in September!

Hello, I’m not cool, so who is Beck? Will my preteen students be familiar with him?
Can you give me some artists’ names or songs they would probably recognize. I did try switching radio stations but they do not announce artists or titles like in the old days. Thanks, Marilyn

Hi Marilyn…You ARE cool because you care enough to ask this question!! Beck is a young american pop star. Your pre-teen students may or may not know his music… he’s definitely an aquired taste 🙂 The best way to keep up to date on the current artists that are popular at the moment is checking in at the American Top 40 at http://www.at40.com/top-40/ You can then have a listen by typing the song name into youtube. I would suggest asking your students, but a favourite trick of mine is to have an uber-cool piece all ready for them without them asking for it. They LOVE to know that you “get” them.
