The next time someone wavers in their commitment to including music in the lives of their children you should show them this video. It is one of the most amazing and inspiring things I have ever seen and will make an impact on anyone who watches it.
To me this is concrete proof that music is not a luxury; it is a necessity. So much so that even those with absolutely nothing find a way – against all odds – to have music in their lives.
It’s Up to Us To Lead The Way
Most of us live in a world where the rental or purchase of a musical instrument is completely within reach. Where music lessons are a viable option. Where the opportunity to make music is right in front of us every single day. How fortunate we are. But with this fortune comes responsibility.
As music teachers we know that music in the life of a child is important; integral even. And so it is our job to make the most of this privilege we both give and receive; to ensure that the silly bits of life don’t interfere with what is clearly a basic need, to show others that music transcends all social and economic boundaries, to demonstrate that the inclusion of music in one’s life is of utmost importance.
How?
By continuing your commitment to passing on this gift you give each day in a way that reaches the most people and impacts the most people. If Sarazan and Fabio can make this commitment amongst the rubble and trash of the slum of Cateura, surely we in our piano studios can as well. And if everyone does this, won’t the world be an even brighter place?
