I can’t seem to get enough of watching these two cellists rock out! For me, these videos reiterate why it is so important to always include popular repertoire as an add-on to every child’s piano lessons. Check out Sulic and Hauser rip up Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal.

Both of these Croatian cellists are classically trained, Sulic at London’s Royal Academy of Music and Hauser at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. But every now and again they like to turn the music world on its head by ripping up some classic pop and rock songs.
I love the passion they bring to their popular covers AND their classical pieces. It’s a reminder that piano students don’t have to have to go down one road OR the other, but that they can enjoy and appreciate classical music as much as they can Top 40.
For kids, classical music can be an acquired taste… but they will, in time, learn to love it. In the meantime, as they acquire this taste, why not let them rock out on the piano every once in a while!
