It was the series finale of the TV show The Office last night. I’m a die-hard Office fan and there’s nothing more I like than humming along with that catchy theme song knowing I’m in for 30 minutes of pure ridiculous entertainment.
And man, is that theme song ever catchy… and so it should be! After all, the only job of a theme song is to be memorable.
Which is why it’s going to be Theme Song Week at my studio next week. Because nothing but lots of practice can happen from playing pieces that were designed to simply to be catchy!
Check out some of the theme songs I’ll be exploring. In the comments below we’d love to know what theme song gets you humming along!
Cheers
A total classic. I played this as a child until my arms ached. It’s jazzy and timeless.
Super Mario Brothers Theme
Okay, so it’s a old video game… but it’s very cool to be retro these days.
The Office
I’m sure going to miss this!
M.A.S.H
You may date yourself by dragging out this baby, but those students of yours who love a beautiful melody will appreciate it!
Angry Birds
Just to be über-relevant you can’t go wrong with this theme song. And if you only watch one of these videos make it this one; this guy plays the Angry Birds theme song with an actual live bird on his shoulder. Only on youtube 😛
We want to know! If you could only teach one theme song to your piano students, what would it be? Share below.

Some students are currently playing The Big Bang Theory theme. In tha past, students have had fun with The Flintsones, Rugrats, Luigi’s Mansion, and the theme from Friends. I can’t choose just one.

M.A.S.H. was the first one that came to mind before I even saw you had mentioned it, but another one is “In My Life” from the show Providence. It was rather short-lived and a few years ago…does anyone else remember that one?

I thought of the jeopardy theme song. One of my students just learned how to play it and absolutely loves playing it. Just a quick question, where can you find the music for angry birds? My students would love to learn that song!

One of my students busted out laughing a few years ago when I played for my class, the “Law and Order” theme song. She was a criminal justice major, so she really appreciated it.
I’m going to miss “The Office” too……..I’m not ready for it to be over. But- maybe it will be one of those shows that’s immortalized forever. Whenever I turn on the TV, all I really want to watch is old reruns of “Friends.” Ha ha.

My son has always loved figuring out how to play theme songs by ear. He is in college now but still enjoys doing this. My students are always inspired by hearing him play theme songs! Some of his favorites are the ones from The Office and Cheers. He also loves “Axel F” from the movie Beverly Hills Cop. One of my students showed me yesterday that he started figuring out (by ear) the Mario Brothers theme–can’t wait to share the YouTube video with him that you shared in this post! (And find sheet music for him). 🙂
