Piano students love surprises! If you’re feeling as though you’re stuck in the same old, same old routines you and your students are likely ready for a change!
Check out our Wacky Wednesday ideas and surprise your piano students this week with a wild day of lessons that will be fun for the both of you! It’s simple to plan, a ton of fun and they’ll be talking about it for weeks (you may need to plan a Magical Monday and a Terrific Tuesday too!)
What Is Wacky Wednesday?
Wacky Wednesday is simply a day where piano lessons at your studio are completely different. The sky is the limit when planning your “wacky” activities… but here’s an easy-to-follow plan that is so simple you could roll out of bed and right into your studio if you wanted to (which… after my recital weekend sounds pretty good to me!)
1. Invite Your Piano Students to Wacky Wednesday – be sure your students know that this day is on the horizon. But a boring old email isn’t going to cut it. Find some funny graphics or a hilarious gif and post to your social media pages or email to parents. Set the tone from the get-go that this is something different and fun!
2. Decorate and Dress – change up your piano studio and make it wacky. What does “wacky” mean? Hit your local Dollar Tree and find things that are silly, that would be typically out of place in a piano studio, and that children would find simply hilarious when they entered your studio. I have an inflatable zebra with fireman’s hat, a bunch of balloons and my potted plant in the corner will be wearing a Hawaiian shirt and some sunglasses. You don’t need to break the bank – just be creative and goofy. You’ve asked your piano students to wear their wackiest outfit, so you should also follow suit!
3. Wack it Up – take your typical piano lesson activities and add a touch of goofy. This doesn’t mean that your students are not going to learn anything (they’ll actually probably retain more!). Choose some piano teaching games and change the rules that they are used to using, play all of their piano pieces backwards starting from the very last bar and working towards the beginning (a great pre-performance task too!), give them upside down sight reading and see if they can do it, switch roles and have them teach you a new piece, do what you typically do at the end of their lesson first etc. etc. Have fun with this!
4. Include some Wacky Activities to Take Home – the Wacky Wednesday fun can continue at home too! Your kids will become practicing maniacs if you can inject some of the excitement from your fun lesson into their home practice. The best way to do this is with our most popular resource. Simply print 7 days worth of activities and send them home. Our zany ideas take care of the rest and we guarantee that your students will want to complete all 7 days!
5. Give them something to take home – A “You Survived Wacky Wednesday” certificate is fun to send home with your piano student. Include a small candy or other treat and you’ll have them bouncing out of your studio with glee!
But what about your Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday piano kids?! Not to worry… Wacky Wednesday can also be Magical Monday, Twisted Tuesday, Thoroughly Nutty Thursday or Foolish Friday. Give it a try… I’m betting your week will fly by!

This is fabulous! We have concerts this week. I’ll see if I can try it in a remaining week in June! But even if not, I’m definitely putting that into the 2013-2014 year. That email is hilarious~~ Thanks for sharing another creative and fun idea!

Hi Drema 🙂 I’m glad someone else finds my sense of humor funny – nothing like a British Llama to deliver a message…

OH I totally love the Llama! I really liked llamas for a period in my life, probably university. I thought that is one of the coolest-silliest looking animals with the coolest name! I wish I can have an inflatable Llama in the studio! We just had our studio concerts this week and at the end I told them to look for an email from me this weekend about their lesson next week. Haha…I just can’t wait~
