So, if you’re a regular reader of the Teach Piano Today blog, you know that I am a pretty organized gal… okay… at least I give off the impression that I am a pretty “organized gal”. And yet, one Wednesday back in April, I found myself scrambling to plan for lessons that afternoon.
Why? Let me explain…
Earlier this year, I discovered that my Apple TV has an entire tab dedicated to movie trailers. And, as it turns out, movie trailers are my guilty pleasure. So, on a Tuesday evening when I should have been planning out piano lessons, I was completely captivated by the “movie trailer channel”.
But it wasn’t just the exciting plot lines that had Trevor and I spellbound… it was the music. And although the power and “epic-ness” of the music meant for a harried Wednesday afternoon, it also meant I had stumbled upon the perfect piano book for teens and tweens.
The result is June’s Piano Book of the Month, The Silver Screen Playbook. I’ll explain more about this exciting book later, but right now, check out the video below to hear some samples of what is about to be your teens and tweens favourite music! (Remember to turn up the volume.)

The Silver Screen Playbook – Epic Music Starring Octaves
June’s Piano Book of the Month, The Silver Screen Playbook, debuts 7 original “movie trailer themes” packed full of emotion, passion and thrilling drama. If you thought your teens were inspired by The Guardians of Arranmore book, just wait until they experience the full, exciting, and cinematic sounds of music that showcases the many different ways octaves can be used to add fullness and drama to piano repertoire.
“Just sight read your latest PBC book and WOW… I think this was your best one yet! I loved playing through all the pieces and I know my students are going to love them too. Beautifully composed … Well done!”
Each piece is accompanied by original movie poster artwork that features “not-yet-released” blockbusters from the minds of Andrea and Trevor Dow 🙂
So grab some popcorn, click on the image below and through sample pages of The Silver Screen Playbook.

For the last 3 weeks I have been using The Silver Screen Book and The Guardians of Arranmore with my older students…..they LOVE them!!!!!!! And with my younger students we are using How to Babysit a Brontosaurus and The Mutterwump Masterpiece. They too have been BIG hits!! What a great way to round out the year, but with music they are practicing and are excited about!! Thank you soooo much. Just love the music book club (and games club too) 🙂
Andrea says
This is so wonderful to hear Sylvia! We’re glad that the variety in levels is allowing so many of your students to use the books… and “double yay” for practicing and excitement being used in the same sentence 🙂

My favourite part of a trip to the cinema is…….the trailers! I am so relieved to learn that I am not the only person who crazy about the trailers.
Thanks Andrea.
Andrea says
Nope, not the only one Fionagh! You just gotta love that stirring music that’s designed to make you feel something immediately 🙂

My book doesn’t arrive until later in the month and I can hardly wait to get it! Wish I had signed up early in the month so I wouldn’t have to wait every month.
I’m teaching three brothers who are all very smart and talented, ages 10, 9.5, and 7.5. They have had a month of lessons but their grasp of music is amazing so I’m stretching them a bit and in addition to their method book introduced their first Mutterwump Masterpiece. I taught it in two sessions and designed a rhythm cup game for them to learn the rhythm and they all three came back and played it perfectly the next week! They loved it!

This book is going to be awesome! Guardians of Arranmore is a favorite in my studio. Many of my students are just finishing it up now and wondering what’s next…. This is perfect. Thanks Andrea!
We actually refer to you by name in our studio. I say things like, “I’ll have to ask Andrea to write another Guardians of Arranmore book.” And we use a circle of fifths to guess, “What chords do you think Andrea picked for this song? Will they make a triangle shape on the circle of fifths again?” It’s all leading up to the fantastic composing my students are going to start working on this summer.
Andrea says
Hee hee… happy to be a personal part of your lessons Angie! In fact, thrilled!
Stephani says
Oh my goodness, love the trailer. This is probably on my top list for favorite book. I LOVE it! In fact, my younger students were hoping they could play it, so anything like it for smaller hands (and possibly less complicated) would also be well-received. Also, I love that you made up movie stars to go with your made up movies. That makes me laugh. I’ve been playing these for some of my students this week asking them to tell me the story based on the poster and the music. Quite fun!
Andrea says
That’s so great Stephani! Glad you’re using the artwork to spark their imagination too. We had a lot of fun working with the artist to create them.

This is, hands down, my older students’ favorite book — even more so than “Guardians”. Everyone’s favorite song? Wolf, also in part because of the awesome movie poster that goes with it. My daughter printed a copy of that page and actually put it up on her wall.
Andrea says
So interesting to hear what people’s favorite piece from the book is! So cool that she has it up on her bedroom wall – thanks for sharing… makes us smile big time 🙂

Just wondering – if I join the book club, would I have access to the past issues as well? Thanks!

I just recently joined the club. I would love to get this Epic release for my students. What do I need to do to get this? Thanks
Shelley says
We did the Arranmore songs for our year end recital. I showed the students your video first to get the excitement going. It was wonderful. Looking forward to this!
Andrea says
Happy to hear you’re showing your students the videos too! We were hoping the videos would help students to get excited about the books 🙂
Rachel says

Marilyn says
I signed up last month, but I’m not sure when the June book will arrive. Will you send me an email with a link to the June book?
Thanks!
Andrea says
Hi Marilyn – so sorry for the delay, usually it’s best to email me if you have a time-sensitive question. I just checked and you signed up on the 23rd so your book would have arrived yesterday (June 23). I’m guessing you’ve found it since this comment? If not, let me know.
Amber says
Is The Silver Screen Playbook still available?
Andrea says
