Whenever the opportunity to engage my piano students with a theme arises, I pounce on it. Small changes in routines, exciting surprises and holiday activities capture their imagination. Which means I end up teaching more focused, motivated children (and that’s always a good thing!).
In previous posts we’ve shared Halloween-themed sight reading activities, theory printables and improv pieces. Today we’re adding to that goodie bag of fall fun with our composing printable “Black Cat Crossing”!
Black Cat Composing… Just Press Print!
Black Cat Composing is the perfect “week-before-Halloween” activity when your kiddos are wired and you are… tired 😉 Simply download the activity below, press “print”, and then let your piano students have a blast creating a mysterious masterpiece.
Download our “Black Cat Crossing” composing activity here!
Be sure to tag us @teachpianotoday (across all social media platforms) in the photos you take of your piano students using our Halloween activities… we absolutely LOVE to see the pictures!
And, If They’re Begging For More Composing Fun…
If your students have been bitten by the composing bug then you’ll want to check out our resource “The Curious Case of Muttzart and Ratmaninoff”. This hilarious resource teaches basic composing skills such as motive creation, sequencing, retrograde and more with a laugh-out-loud adventure that has delighted students around the world! Find it here.

Thank you SO much! They are going to love this fun piece to compose!
Also,”terrifying technique” is a big hit around here. I have taken it one step further: I read the story and allow them to create their own background music. If we have time, we invite mom in to entertain her with a performance too at the end of the lesson.
Appreciate all you send…………Patsy

Thank you once again. I printed it today and used it today. Student had fun putting lyrics to his composition. It’s about his costume, a Ninja!

Hello! Love your composing activities; my students have a blast with them too. I’m just curious about what program you use to make these activities? I’d like to try my hand at making some composing sheets of my own for my students to use, and a computer program would make it a lot easier.
Andrea says
We use Sibelius 🙂
