Beside my piano is a pad of paper. It’s covered with scrawled notes, quick little diagrams and doodles. I use it to keep track of my piano students’ needs, struggles, favorite activities, and least favorite activities.
At the end of each week, Trevor turns one of my paper pad musings into a beautiful printable that can be used by myself and the Teach Piano Today community.
Last week, one of my notes read, “Really couldn’t care less about 3/4 vs 4/4 time” 😉 So today we’re sharing a printable that will help your primer-level piano students engage with these two time signatures in a motivating and relevant way.
A Printable Primer-Level Time Signature Activity
Today’s piano printable comes with a game board and a set of cards (see download instructions below). Print out the file, laminate the game board, cut out the cards, and then follow along with the easy game play.
How To Play:
- Have your student place a coin over each honey bee time signature.
- Show your student a card containing a measure of music. Ask your student to clap and count the rhythm to determine the measure’s missing time signature and then remove one coin from a honey bee.
- If the time signature revealed by your student matches the measure’s missing time signature, instruct your student to place the coin and the card to the side. If a match is not found, instruct your student to place the coin back on the honey bee and the card back in the deck.
- Keep playing until your student has removed three coins.

How sweet it is! This is such an adorable printable! August the 19th is “National Honey Bee” month! That will be the theme of the piano performance and theory class at our studio. I was getting bee themed theory games together, and yours came right on time!! Thank you from the heart for your kindness and generosity.
