The first five minutes of a piano lesson are critical. If you can capture the attention of a student in the first five minutes, the rest of the lesson will be a breeze. Too often, however, piano lessons are anything but breezy… because the first five minutes are composed of mundane, boring, technical warm-ups.
But that’s about to change!
With the piano resource we’re previewing in today’s post, the first five minutes of lessons will go from dull to dynamite as your students have a blast improving their finger flexibility, hand extensions and finger speed. Keep reading to learn more.
Rock The First 5 Minutes Of A Lesson With Lead Sheets
K-Crew and the Urban Keys is August’s book of the month from Teach Piano Today’s PianoBookClub. The 18 late-elementary lead sheets in this book will infuse energy into the first five minutes of your piano lessons as your kids warm up their fingers while enjoying the creativity that lead sheets provide.
K-Crew and the Urban Keys is divided into three stellar sections: Hip Hop Hand Extensions, Full Out Fingers, and Freestyle Finger Flex. Each section contains an inspiring instructional page and six lead sheets designed to help your students master skill-building warm-ups.
With simple-to-follow teacher pages, this book will get you and your students rockin’ out to lead sheets in no time, even if you’ve never taught using lead sheets before.

Jane says
Do you have to join the book club to get this book?
Andrea says
Hi Jane – yes, our music is all available through PianoBookClub.com. As long as you sign up before August 31st this is the book you’ll receive immediately via email 🙂
Nancy Hiatt says
This is so cute! However, it would be too challenging for my beginners – do you have something similar for primer and level 1?
Andrea says
Hi Nancy – our PianoBookClub book “Cob Webster” was easier – if you are a PianoBookClub member you can watch for it as a re-release that you can “add on” to your regular membership. If you need info on this and are a member of PianoBookClub – email me 🙂
Bonnie says
Love the book club, look forward each month. Just wanted to encourage you to write something for beginners. Something to use with our Method Books to reinforce note reading on a Primary level like Middle C or C position. Just a thought!
Andrea says
Hi Bonnie – we have done this in the past (look for Nuts About Note Reading, My Sight Reading Superpower, Zzzz’s and G’s, Dozy Doormouse and The Sleepless Beat, The Mysterious Case of Chewtwig van Beaverton, and Intervalactic as the re-released books you can choose to purchase as an “add-on” each month if you are a continuing member) and there is more coming in the next few months! 🙂
Michael Tyson says
Hi! I love the sample, but I just opened the email and saw that it’s past the due date! Will you offer this book or one like it again soon?
Andrea says
Hi Michael! Continuing members of PianoBookClub get the chance to purchase past books each month as an optional add-on 🙂 This is how you can catch up on books you missed in previous months. Email me if you want more info on this 🙂
Judy King says
Is this a book that would be sent home with them then? Or is it a sightreading/in-studio resource mainly?
Andrea says
Hi Judy – it’s a book you would sent home for home practice too as a “warm-up” before their repertoire practice. However, you could certainly use it as sight-reading in lessons as well. This book isn’t available anymore as it’s past August 31st, but if you become a continuing member of PianoBookClub then you’d have the opportunity to purchase past books as an “add-on” to catch up on those you missed before you became a member 🙂
Anna Orias says
I am part of the book club, but missed this one. How may I access things that I forgot to download?
Andrea says
Just email me Anna 🙂 I can help/send it to you right away 🙂
