If you’ve ever sat through a recital filled with young beginners, then you’ll know that rhythmic accuracy is something that can often be ignored 🙂 In the early stages of learning to play the piano, students have many things to think about… and often rhythm gets tossed out the window in favor of note reading and simply “getting to the end”.
This means that, for your young beginners, making rhythm a major focus of your lesson time is a great idea. And making this focus on rhythm an enjoyable (and therefore memorable) experience is also a great idea!
Because nothing is more fun than game-based learning, today we’re sharing a printable activity you can use to reinforce the important early concept of note values.
Dig Deep Into Rhythm-Teaching Fun Here!
Today’s printable is easy to set up and even easier to play. All you need is the activity sheet (see download instructions below) and some coins. Your students will be putting their rhythmic value knowledge to the test as they listen for and identify quarter, half and whole notes.
To play, have your students follow these instructions:
- Place a coin over each note value on the activity sheet.
- While tapping a steady beat, your teacher will play quarter, half or whole notes. Determine the note value played and then remove one coin from the activity sheet.
- If the revealed note value image matches the note value played by your teacher in Step 2, you may keep the coin. If a match is not found, place the coin back on the activity sheet.
- Keep playing until you have removed three coins.

Hey guys, I am a private piano teacher and I love your resources. Do you happen to have hard copies of these things that we can buy and different teaching materials that I can purchase? Thanks so much for any info. Alicia Starcher
