You know you have reached the pinnacle of piano teaching when kids beg their parents to practice piano. It’s true; nurturing kids to become this invested in piano lessons is no easy task.
But it can be done… and the simplest way to get started is to get your piano students composing! Composing gives kids a sense of pride and ownership over their music. And when you combine those two things with a piece they love, you will literally have to peel them off your piano.
In today’s post we’re showcasing a story-based resource that lets young students compose mini-measures to complete engaging, early-elementary piano pieces. Check it out below.
A Composing Resource To Keep Kids Glued To The Bench
Farmer Felix is too old to tend to his land, and Barnyard Brooke doesn’t have the money to buy him out… unless she can win the award for the County Fair’s Finest Farmhand. But when disaster strikes on the day of the competition, nothing but a musical miracle and some magical motives will save the day.
Barnyard Brooke and the Magical Motives is February’s Piano Book of the Month from Teach Piano Today’s PianoBookClub. It has the memorable characters, engaging illustrations, and creative music that teachers need to capture the imaginations of their piano students, giving them the tools and the motivation required to compose seven original compositions.
Designed to make music creation fun and accessible for your Early Elementary piano students, this book is a simple-to-follow, step-by-step resource that will have your students composing ’til the cows come home. Even if you’ve never taught composing before… your students will be running out your studio door waving their very own masterpiece after one lesson.

I like the composing book. CAN I purchase it without being a club member?
Andrea says
Hi Betty – all of our books are only available through the membership – but you can cancel at anytime. However, we hope to impress you with our unique take on supplementary repertoire so much that you’ll never want to leave! 😉
Julie says
You’ll find so many valuable resources here Betty. Even if you don’t use them all it will inspire you to create your own ideas. $11 a month is such good value. My students all look forward to “What new game do we play today!?”
Patricia says
Aloha, I am already a piano book club member but would please like to receive my books earlier in the month, they come late in the month right now. Can you adjust for me? Thank you!
Andrea says
Hi Patrica – absolutely! I’ll adjust it so your book arrives tomorrow and then on the 3rd starting March 3rd 🙂

I can’t wait to use this book! The Piano Book Club has been such a great asset to my studio! Is there any way I can get it earlier than my current monthly date? I am leaving for an extended period this weekend and would like to download it before I leave. Thanks guys!
Andrea says
Hi April – absolutely! I’ve changed it so your book will arrive on February 16th and then on the 2nd of the month starting in March 🙂 So glad to hear that PianoBookClub is well-loved in your studio!
Yuliana says
Dear Andrea! Could you , please, switch mine as well. I haven’t received this book yet. I want to receive it earlier. Thank you!
Beth says
Are all the songs in the book in C position?
Beth says
(The reason I asked if the book is all in C position was so that I could decide if it would be a good fit for the students I was thinking of using it with.) It’s a brilliant book, by the way!
Andrea says
Hi Beth – yes, this book is Early-Elementary so all in C 5-finger position, 4/4 time, quarter/half/whole notes only, no rests, no hands together, no accidentals. We designed it to be simple as the overall goal is to teach composing and so students should feel comfortable, not challenged while doing so. Hope you get the chance to use it – it’s lots of fun 🙂
Annette Galloway says
Can you change my date to earlier in the month too?? I would appreciate it if you can set up the billing date in the 4th or the 5th. Any chance if that? I’m really excited to see this composing book!
Andrea says
Hi Annette! Of course – I’ve changed it so your book will arrive on February 21st and then on the 4th starting March 4th 🙂
Annette says
Thanks! I’m looking forward to the new book!
