Now is the perfect time to use our summer composing activity for piano students.
The transition between seasons is a time of change for piano teachers; fall changing to winter marks the end of studio-startup chaos, winter changing to spring signals the end of winter-themed activities, and spring changing to summer marks the beginning of a more relaxed pace as school finishes.
To keep your piano studio fresh, fun, and exciting, it’s important to celebrate these transitions. Right now, you and your students may be transitioning to a well-deserved break or to summer lessons. Either way, today’s cool composing activity will help you mark this milestone.
Your piano kids will have fun learning how to create a simple, summer-themed composition with an activity that can be used in lessons or sent home as an at-home summer project that they can prepare for their return in the fall.
A Summer Composing Activity For Piano Students
Everyone knows that children should learn to read AND write in school… and it is equally important that piano teachers give their students the opportunity to do the same in piano lessons. Knowing how to read AND write music are essential skills that every piano student should develop.
Even if you’ve never taught composing before, today’s printable breaks down beginning composing skills into a manageable format that will keep your students feeling successful and will guarantee a pleasing little piece that they can play with pride over the summer months.
Click on the image below to download our Summer Composing Activity For Piano Students and follow along with the easy directions on Page 1 to create a motive. Then, insert the motive into the piano piece on Page 2 (your student writes her motive in every measure where a shark fin appears) and voila… you’re done! You can either complete this in lesson time with your student or you can go over the instructions and send it home with them after their last lesson before the summer break. Use this with students who are comfortable with accidentals and eighth notes.

You can get your primer piano students composing as soon as they’re reading in Middle C Position with Barnyard Brooke and The Magical Motives. With a book for each stage of primer-level development, your piano students can learn to be creative AND develop their note-reading skills through creating their own music and note printing on the staff.
