As a student, I did piano exams every single year. And every single year they stressed me out. My worries had nothing to do with my preparation and nothing to do with the difficulty of my piano pieces. Nope, my worries were the direct result of one small aspect of a piano exam… sight reading.
I hated sight reading with a passion. It was my achilles heal and I could not come up with a single good reason for why I had to waste my time with such a useless activity.
And then I became a piano teacher and realized that piano students who are taught to sight read early and often are less frustrated and more confident piano players. Ultimately, they also tend to stick with piano lessons for the long term.
The problem for piano teachers, of course, is that sight reading can be a real bore… unless your students experience it with the resource we’re showcasing in today’s post.

Awesome! What grade level sight reading would you approximate this to?

This is so fun, Andrea! I made the decision to move my entire studio to 45 minute lessons with the express purpose of being able to include more technique and sight reading exercises in the lessons. Your sight reading books will be well-used, I can assure you!
Thank you for these wonderful resources! 🙂

I’m planning to use this in conjunction with a sight-reading challenge. Question – are the pieces that are included designed to be sight-read as well or more of a piece to be learned?
