This past weekend we decorated our house for Christmas. Our tree is up, our twinkle lights are blinking and our miniature village is looking cheery. It’s transformed our typically minimalist home into a shining spectacle.
And our 7-year-old is enraptured… that’s a kind choice of words for “completely distracted and somewhat crazed”.
As I did her hair this morning she wrote down questions she’d like to ask Santa if they were to bump into each other in the hallway on Christmas Eve. While she was supposed to be brushing her teeth she was choreographing an elf dance in the bathroom. When we asked her to get dressed we found her 20 minutes later in her PJs and a Santa hat arranging her stuffed animals into a sleigh-pulling team.
At this time of year, it’s next to impossible to bring children down from the high that is Christmas excitement. And really… why would we want to? It’s a magical time of year to be a kid. But that “magic” can become a problem in a piano lesson setting when you really need to make some learning happen.
To help you bring your “enraptured” little ones back to earth during the Christmas season, today we’re sharing a “Piano Printable Survival Pack” that will satisfy their need for Christmas fun while meeting your lesson goals.
Three Christmas Piano Lesson Printables For Your Young Students
Below, we are sharing three Christmas printables for beginning piano students. The littlest kiddos in your studio are generally the ones that need the most nudging when it comes to pre-Christmas piano lessons. You’ll be able to brush up on some beginning skills while capturing their attention at a time of year when they really just want to jump up and down in a sea of candy canes and gum drops.
1. Printable #1 – Shaking Presents (Finger Numbers)
Shaking Presents helps to reinforce finger numbers and identify any misunderstandings or “bad habits”. Laminate it for repeated use in your studio and get your kids tap-tapping away while solidifying their finger number recall. Click here or on the image below to download.
2. Printable #2 – Holiday Hurry (Note Reading)
Off-the-bench time in the weeks leading up to Christmas is imperative, so shake off the wiggles with this note-reading game that can be played away from the piano. Allow yourself to exist in their world of laughter for a moment and get down beside them to play along with your own game board! Click here or on the image below to download.
3. Printable #3 – Candy Cane Carry (Rhythm Practice)
Don’t let the pre-Christmas fidgets wreak havoc on your students’ rhythmic accuracy. If you’re constantly reminding your students to count, or if their understanding of rests has gone by the wayside, pull out this printable and re-build those “rhythm brain wrinkles”. Thank you so much for these. My 8 year old student loves these delightful printables. I love them because they’re simple and fun, and they allow me to reinforce concepts she’s already learned.
