If you’re not old enough to have gray hair then you have probably, at times, felt like pulling a few strands out. Trust me, I’ve been there. In fact, I’ve been there so many times that I’ve written numerous articles outlining the strategies that I have used to turn difficult piano students into students I actually looked forward to teaching.
As the spring months show up on our calendar, Trevor and I get an influx of emails from piano teachers asking for guidance in teaching their wiggly, hard-to-focus, defiant and otherwise “tough to teach” students.

Lacey, I teach a 5-yr-old with high functioning autism. He started lessons 9 months ago at 4.5 He spent most of his initial interview/free lesson, “stemming.” In his case, spinning on the floor. I initially suggested his parents bring him back for another interview in 3 months, giving him more time to mature. The disappointment in his mother’s eyes broke my heart. As I prayed for them, I started getting ideas of things that I could try that might work. I called her a few days after our interview and suggested that they try to find someone more qualified to teach him but as they searched, I would start the process of working with him. She told me that after the interview/free lesson, he had been asking to come back to play piano with me. He is still with me… 9 months later. My conclusion: These children are amazing; teaching them is challenging, exhausting, time consuming…and rewarding. When you start seeing them experience “light bulb” moments… it is priceless. During the first 7 months of lessons, I easily spent 30 – 50 hours a week preparing for just his next lesson. (I have 20 students and most have 45 minute lessons. The first 6 months with him involved a lot of long nights. He is my last student of the week and most of the materials I’ve used with him I had to create and design, based on my observations of what worked best the week before. He is now reading notes and rhythm on the staff and all those months of time consuming hard work is paying off… Now, those “light bulb” moments are coming almost weekly…. Initially, there were weeks, when I felt helpless and nothing I found online offered a solution. I often felt like giving up but then I would come up with another idea and it worked and I would build off of that. Not every week has been a success, but then… all students have off weeks at times. Teaching him by rote/ear, initially, wasn’t possible. He couldn’t hear two repeated notes played in succession. I’ve spent months retraining his ear; what seemed impossible has become possible and his progress has amazed me. I’ve taught other children with similar needs but he is the youngest and the most challenging. After the second lesson, he quit spinning on the floor. I have a list of off the bench activities that allow him opportunities for movement and to process concepts. When we love our students, it motivates us to find a way or to suggest someone who might be a better fit for them. I would never suggest that I’m the only or best teacher for any given student.
