The term Score Study isn’t very exciting! By words alone, it can’t compete with Keyboard Coloring or Note Reading Maze.
But score study is more important than both of those things and it is a skill that needs to be introduced to young students.
Today’s primer Halloween Score Study coloring activity is all about developing the habit early.
It is about teaching primer piano students the importance of investigating a piano piece before it is played.

Starting Off Simple | A Primer Halloween Score Study
The best trick-or-treaters don’t just grab a pillowcase and hit the streets. Instead, they put in the work.
Weeks before Halloween arrives, the true masters analyze a neighborhood for factors like distance between houses, length of driveways, and quality of past candy.
Based on the data, they map out the preferred route for maximum candy collection 🙂
The process of Score Study is similar.
Kids need to learn that the best piano players don’t just grab a piece of music and hit the keys. Instead, they analyze the music for note sets, rhythmic challenges, dynamics, tempo markings, and phrasing.
Only when they have a good grasp of the skills required, will they tackle the challenge.
Of course, when first developing the habit of score study, the goal is to simply introduce the idea of examining a piano piece beforehand.
This means, that many of the aforementioned elements should be set aside… for now.
With today’s printable, your primer students need only examine their scores from a note reading perspective.
As mentioned, a true Score Study will come later. Right now it is all about building the habit of studying a score before it is played.
