Today we are sharing our first teen Christmas piano piece of the season.
Composed in the key of F major, and in 6/8 time, our pop rendition of It Came Upon A Midnight Clear can be used with teens working in an intermediate level 2 method book.
Your older students, who are likely swamped with piano exams, school, and work, will enjoy this piece that sounds impressive while being quick to learn.
If you don’t teach older students, have fun playing this piece for your own personal enjoyment!

Set in the key of F Major, ‘Midnight Clear’ explores 6/8 time with an upbeat take on a classic carol.
In this piece, your students will work to improve their comfort with 6/8 rhythms while also becoming more at ease with a modified hand position that requires a stretch between their 1st and 3rd fingers.
With its lively sound, ‘Midnight Clear’ is composed with a simple left-hand accompaniment, allowing your intermediate students to master it in time to showcase it during the holiday season. Additional teaching points in this piece include crossover fingering, pedaling in 6/8 time, playing slurs that end with a dramatic staccato, hand balance, and dynamic contrasts.
This holiday solo can serve as a “quick learn” for your Intermediate Level 3 students or as a challenge piece for Intermediate Level 2 students. In either scenario, the opportunity to introduce a foot-tapping carol that your students might not yet know, will bring smiles to your studio this holiday season.
