Summer is almost here, and I know we all worry about our students losing momentum during the break.
I’ve created a simple tool that really helps – our 2024 Summer Note Reading Calendars.
If you used last year’s calendars then you know they’re super easy, asking kids to read just one note a day. This keeps them connected to their music without feeling overwhelmed. It’s a great way to prevent that summer slide and keep them thinking about piano.
In today’s post, you can grab our new 2024 Summer Note Reading Calendars (this year we have created three different sets!) and see how they can make a difference for your students!

Small Steps to Big Progress: The Power of Daily Note Reading
Our 2024 Summer Note Reading Calendars are back by popular demand 🙂 Instead of only sharing a single set (like last year), this year we have created three sets! One calendar reinforces note reading in middle C position, another focuses on C position, and the third targets G position.
Here’s why these calendars work so well:
- Deepening Musical Understanding: Even though they’re only identifying one note each day, they end up thinking about the notes around it too. This means they’re actually processing multiple notes, subtly reinforcing their overall note reading skills.
- Maintaining a Musical Habit: Reading a note every day helps keep their musical minds in tune. This daily engagement, no matter how small, keeps the music habit alive and often leads to more practice. Once the piano binder is open, they might feel inclined to play a bit more, turning a quick task into a fruitful practice session.
- Encouraging Parental Involvement: Even if students only read that one note, parents often encourage them to do a bit more. This gentle nudge can lead to more extensive practice without feeling like a chore.
As the saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” By taking small steps each day, your students will continue to progress and keep their musical skills sharp over the summer.
Today’s updated summer note reading calendars are available at the bottom of this post. Keep reading to find out how you can download them and keep your students engaged all summer long!
Something For Your Overachieving Note Readers!
Some students will think that reading a single note is plenty 🙂
But I am certain that your studio is full of overachievers. And these students will want more than one note a day.
They will be keen to devour as much note reading as you can give them.
And for these students, Andrea And Trevor Dow’s Timed Note Reading Tests For Piano are just what they crave.
With over 90 days of note reading exercises, these VERY affordable books are quickly becoming a must-have resource for all primer and level 1 piano students.
While they get rave reviews from teachers, parents love them too! Seeing their children doing daily activities in a piano homework book is a visual reminder that piano lessons are well worth the money.
