When I started teaching piano I was young (I still am!… right?) and inspired. I was full of new ideas… ready to let them loose on the piano teaching world; ready to introduce a wave of change!
So, loaded with passion, I went to my first music teachers’ workshop, ready to make connections and learn from those who had been in the biz for years…
But upon entering, the wind was taken from my sails. I found myself surrounded by a group of teachers completely disconnected from the real world; a group of teachers so consumed by their own personal interests and agendas that they had completely forgotten who piano lessons are really about.
And despite sitting in that meeting feeling like I had just experienced a serious sucker-punch to the stomach, I left that meeting feeling like Rocky… ready to be the underdog and rejuvenate piano lessons in my home community.
And that is just what I did!
Following the success of our music school, my husband and I decided to launch TeachPianoToday.com with the intent of inspiring teachers everywhere to embrace and connect with a new generation of piano students. And we couldn’t have been happier with our decision.
Through our online community we have had the opportunity to interact with thousands of teachers who share our goal.
One such teacher is Catherine Shefski over at AllPiano.wordpress.com. While our only contact has been via Twitter, her blog is one of my regular stops during morning coffee. She too is doing a tremendous job of inspiring a new generation of teachers.
