Note reading is something that should happen every day. And the best way to make something happen every day is to turn the desired activity into a habit.
But how can you help students develop a note-reading habit if you only see them for 30 minutes a week?
Simple… create a note-reading activity that is connected to something that happens in each and every lesson!
Today’s post will show you how your students can improve their note reading by completing Note Reading Bounty Bucks right before they walk out your studio door.

How To Use Note Reading Bounty Bucks
Creating a note-reading habit will be easy for your students if it is connected to something that happens in every lesson.
So, what happens in every lesson without fail? Packing up!
Most students will put their piano books in a bag, while others may simply mark pages with a bookmark and then close their books.
Either way, they are packing up.
And when this happens, you can teach your students to use this as a signal to complete one Note Reading Bounty Buck.
A Note Reading Bounty Buck is a piano studio reward that can be used to “purchase” little toys or trinkets from a studio store or music-based rewards like extra game time or a coveted piece of sheet music.
The Note Reading Bounty Bucks have three note images on the back. Each week, immediately after your student packs up to go home, instruct them to grab a Bounty Buck from a jar, write the note names below each note image on the back, and then return it to you.
If all notes are named correctly, the student keeps the Bounty Buck in their binder (a ziplock baggie does the trick!). As their stash grows each week, your student can choose to use the money to purchase a little treat from your studio store.
Can we let you in on a little secret?
Today’s Note Reading Bounty Bucks reinforce note reading in the treble C 5-finger scale and are designed to match a special new piano book that will be released next week!

As you plan for the start of another year, you are probably thinking about the materials your students will need to purchase.
This year, in addition to method books, you’ll want all of your students to be carrying Andrea And Trevor Dow’s Timed Note Reading Tests For Piano in their music bags.
With over 90 days of note reading exercises, these VERY affordable books are quickly becoming a must-have resource for all primer and level 1 piano students (just $8.95!)
While they get rave reviews from teachers, parents love them too! Seeing their children doing daily activities in a piano homework book is a visual reminder that piano lessons are well worth the money.
