As a composer, early level 2 piano music is my greatest challenge.
With students still reliant on 5-finger positions, creating melodies that are captivating and cool can be a struggle.
This is exacerbated during the holiday season. As hard as it is to create melodies, it is even harder to replicate popular Christmas tunes with such a limited range of notes.
But then I imagine the sad little faces of your level 2 students.
And I force myself into my piano studio determined not to emerge without a holiday gift for these kiddos.
The result is today’s early level 2 rendition of We Three Kings. I’ve managed to add a little pop flair while maintaining a melody that respects the original tune!

Today’s level 2A Christmas piano music is available at the bottom of the post but first…
Level 2 piano students are entering the most important stage of their musical development. They are transitioning from the simple melodies of early method books to the more complex sounds of intermediate music.
WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 2A is the bridge that makes this transition seamless. It is the bridge that will keep your piano students in lessons at a time in their development when so many of their peers will quit.
Jam-packed with pop-infused piano studies, technical exercises, sight-reading, lap tap clap rhythm work, teacher-student duets, classical pop cross-overs, and improvisation, this book provides kids in this stage of their musical journey with exactly what they want: super cool, “peer-approved” music that is developmentally appropriate and perfectly paced.
WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 2A explores the G Major and G Minor 5-Finger Scales, the D Major and D Minor 5-Finger Scales, and the A Major and A Minor 5-Finger Scales as well as eighth rests, dotted eighth note rhythms, pick-up bars, and left-hand patterns. Your students will also get to explore techniques in this book including pedaling, phrasing, and hand balance.

Set in the A Minor 5-finger scale, Yonder Star is a dramatic, moody choice that will provide variety to your piano students’ holiday repertoire.
In this piece, your students will work to improve their comfort with a broken chord pattern in the left hand. Additional teaching points in this piece include pedal technique, dynamic contrasts, the 3/4 time signature, and mid-piece hand movement.
As an added learning opportunity, this piece provides the chance for your students to practice a simple chord change in the left hand as a first introduction to basic left-hand movement. We’ve highlighted this occasional chord change in color to draw attention to this new skill.
This holiday solo can serve as a “quick learn” for your Level 2B students or as a challenge piece for your piano students working at the end of WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 2A. In either case, your piano students will appreciate this dramatic version of a well-known carol.
