Sixteen year old guys don’t tend to share their feelings too often. So when a good friend paid me a compliment back in high school, it struck a chord and it literally changed my life (and my piano teaching business).
Piano Teaching Advice I Will Never Forget
I can’t remember how or why it came about, I can only remember exactly what he said… “Trevor, you never pretend to be someone you’re not… you’re real and that’s awesome.”
That was the best compliment I ever received. I apply it to every life decision I make. I feel guilty if ever I stray from his words.
This compliment is the reason our studio now teaches piano to over 300 children…
When we started our piano school there was always a temptation to do what other piano teachers were doing; teach kids piano like THEY teach kids piano, advertise piano lessons like THEY advertise piano lessons, deal with piano teaching problems like THEY deal with piano teaching problems.
Unfortunately, what THEY were doing just didn’t feel natural. We could not teach piano to kids the way many teachers were teaching piano to kids. I am not saying that what they were doing was wrong… I am simply saying that what they were doing was not right… for us.
If you want to be successful teaching piano to kids you have to stay true to who you are. People can spot a fake from a mile away. Not everyone will like you, but those who do will love you! And those who love you will be the greatest marketing tool your piano teaching studio could ever ask for!
Is this how you feel?
Back when we first started our piano teaching school we were chomping at the bit to leave our mark on the piano teaching world! The only problem was… we needed students. Fortunately, business and marketing is as much a passion for us as piano teaching, and it wasn’t long before our phone was ringing off the hook.
Once we had students walking through our piano studio doors, we knew our lesson plans would blow them away. And they did!
After discovering what worked in the piano teaching world, success was simple.
