Did you give Adele’s dress a thumbs up or a thumbs down on Sunday evening? If you don’t know what I’m talking about I’m guessing you didn’t watch the 55th annual Grammy Awards.
But you will definitely want to start taking notes on red carpet fashion because you just may be in attendance next year… as a nominee!
The Grammy Foundation and the Recording Academy announced on Sunday that a new trophy for influential Music Educators would be awarded next year. Anyone can nominate you (and pssst.. you can even nominate yourself!) Not only do you get to attend the biggest event in the music industry, but you also win $10,000. Not bad!
We loved this announcement. It’s one great big giant nod towards all of the music teachers working behind the scenes to make their students the very best they can be. Each of the “next big things” accepting their awards on Sunday had an influential music teacher at some point in their life. And who knows… the next Taylor Swift could be sitting on your piano bench tomorrow afternoon! But music teachers no longer have to be known as “Taylor Swift’s teacher”… nope, they can be “Grammy Award Winning Music Teacher ____”. And while this trophy (the one “grrrr” I have about it) will be awarded to a music teacher who works within a US public or private school (no private studios yet… darn!) it’s a step in a very good direction for music teachers everywhere.
So get nominating! It’s all there at www.grammymusicteacher.com If you also teach in a school setting (as many of you do)… we want to see you on stage next year accepting your award… and in an outfit much more flattering than was Adele’s 🙂

Private studio teachers are not eligible, but I am still glad to hear they are recognizing other fabulous music educators!

Hi Victoria – yes, we mention this restriction in the blog post – many of the teachers we interact with on this blog also teach music in a school setting. Perhaps one day they will change it to allow private studio teachers too! Why not, right?!

I loved Adele’s dress! I thought it was fun. 🙂
But, bummer about the US school thing- otherwise I would totally nominate YOU!

Awww… how sweet of you Sarai!

Hmmmm…. they should definitely open up to private studio teachers, but this is a step in the right direction. I think you should email the Junos and get the Canadian equivalent started 🙂

Hi Jessica – I might just do so!
