A piano student’s very first method book is exciting. It lays the foundation for years of musical learning. But, there could be a book that is even more predictive of a student’s musical success: their Level 1 method book.
Music lessons for beginning students are exciting (even if their beginning piano books are a bore). And, while it is certainly a bad idea to use ineffective beginning piano books, it may be even more detrimental to your students and your studio to use ineffective Level 1 method books.
Why? Because ny the time piano students have reached level 1 method books, they have been in lessons for a year or two and the shine of the musical experience may have worn off. If their level 1 method books are pedagogically weak and uninspiring, they will not stick with piano lessons long enough to make it to level 2 method books.
So, for the sake of your studio, now is a wonderful time to reassess your level 1 method book, and if it doesn’t make your students wildly excited to be playing the piano, it might be time to switch to the WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 1 program!
In two weeks, just in time for the start of another teaching year, we will be releasing WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 1B, the second and final book in our level 1 series.
WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 1A was released in January and has been a smash hit in studios around the world.

5 Reasons Your Students Will Fall In Love With WunderKeys Level 1
Too many students quit piano lessons. The reason they quit is because they get frustrated, and the reason they get frustrated is because their music is not developmentally appropriate, not logically sequenced, or not perfectly paced.
In this post we’ll share the 5 difference-makers that help WunderKeys Level 1 stand out as one of the most pedagogically sound method books on the market. By clicking on the link above you’ll also get to preview some sound samples from Level 1A
This Is What Sets WunderKeys Level 1 Apart From The Rest…
Traditional method books typically use a “talk and play” approach. The piano teacher explains a concept by reading the provided instructions and then the student plays a piano piece that reinforces the skill. Students using traditional method books often interact with their music in only one way; by playing it. Rinse and repeat.
But this one-size-fits-all approach to learning music is leaving kids behind. So we decided to break the mold!

I will have a new piano student starting this September who is 9 years old. Can I start her on this Level One book without having gone through the primer lever?
Andrea says
Hi Maureen – Level 1 assumes knowledge gained in a Primer, so if she’s brand new to the piano you would start her in WunderKeys Primer Book 1. Many teachers use them with 9 year olds 🙂
connie masson says
So I would start a new 7 year old in Wunderkeys Primer, and that has 3 parts?
Andrea says
Hi Connie! Yes, at age 7 you would start in WunderKeys Primer Book 1 and work through Books 2 and 3. Once your student graduates Primer Book 3 he or she would move into WunderKeys Level 1A. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1976001293
