I’ll never forget something one of my teen piano students said to me as we were learning about key signatures and the circle of fifths. As I launched into my explanation, he interrupted me and said, “Just one second… I have to find a place in my brain to put this… somewhere between calculus and chemistry.”
It made me smile, but it also reminded me that our teens face many daily demands; not only on their time but also on their “brain space”.
As piano lessons are intended to be a joyful outlet in our teens’ week, it’s important that teachers keep this in mind. When teens are feeling overwhelmed by “information overload”, some of that joy disappears, and when this happens, piano lessons risk becoming a source of additional stress.
But… there are important concepts our teens need to know in order to advance their piano playing skills!
The solution, therefore, is in giving information to your teens in small, manageable amounts and reinforcing it frequently in a game-based way.
So today we are sharing two key signature brain games that adhere to these teen and tween teaching principles.
Key Signature Reinforcement For Teens And Tweens
Today’s piano printables are designed for tween and teen students who are exploring the key signatures of D Major, A Major, Bb Major, B Minor, G Minor, and F# Minor. With a game-based approach, your teen piano students will be memorizing key signatures while eagerly trying to conquer the theory challenges.
While the games can be used as standalone activities, they work wonders when paired with our teen method books, WunderKeys Pop Studies For Piano 2 and An Intermediate Performance Companion For Pop Studies 2.
With our pop method book series for teens, we’ve created a program that reinforces scales, chords, triads, and left-hand patterns by transforming exercise-based repertoire into motivating pop piano studies.
