The most rambunctious piano student I ever worked with was a little boy named Billy. He was one part wrecking ball and one part tornado.
The only time he would calm down during a piano lesson was when some large truck would rumble by my studio; at which point his face would be glued to the window as he admired the rig rolling past.
I learned very quickly that if I wanted to teach Billy anything, my entire piano teaching strategy would have to revolve around the construction industry 🙂
And so, for half an hour every week, I was no longer a piano teacher… I was a musical foreman.
If you teach a Billy Backhoe, there is a good chance that he will be hard to handle during his first piano lesson after the summer break.
But, if you use the construction-themed, back-to-school primer piano solo that we are sharing today, he will be the sweetest student you see all week!

Just like magic, our piano solo, Digger School With Billy Backhoe (available below) will calm the busiest of students; but it’s only one song and it will last only so long. If you want peaceful piano lessons to continue you will definitely want to check out our resource, I Dig Piano!
I Dig Piano is a supplementary piano book for mid-primer piano students who are comfortable playing in Middle C position.
This exciting resource contains music and so much more. Inside you will discover 8 digger-themed piano pieces with lyrics, note reading games, warm-up exercises, a sight-reading activity, a rhythm activity, a practice tracker, and a certificate of achievement.
