Summer practice expectations can vary greatly between students.
Some students will make us happy by hitting the keys every day while others can bring us joy by simply remembering how to read notes.
Today’s summer note reading calendars are intended for the latter.
They can, of course, be used with all students but are particularly beneficial in maintaining a musical connection, however slight, with your less-than-motivated students.

Daily Note Reading For The Summer Holidays
Our summer note reading calendars require students read just one note a day during July and August. While that seems trivial, they are effective for two important reasons:
First, reading a single note requires that students consider other notes when completing the daily task. So, while they will only write one answer on the calendar, their brains will actually process the visual appearance of several notes before answering the question.
Second, the simple task of reading a single note every day will maintain your students connection to music. If your students are engaged with music, even if that engagement is tiny, it will likely blossom into further engagement.
With their piano binders already open, the reading of that single note will turn into a practice session every now and again.
And, even if your students are not motivated to do anything more than read that one note, it is likely that their parents will suggest they do a bit more.
As the proverb goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.
Today’s summer note reading calendars are available at the bottom of the post, but first…
Something For Your Overachieving Note Readers!
Some students will think that reading a single note is plenty 🙂
But I am certain that your studio is full of overachievers. And these students will want more than one note a day.
They will be keen to devour as much note reading as you can give them.
And for these students, Andrea And Trevor Dow’s Timed Note Reading Tests For Piano are just what they crave.
With over 90 days of note reading exercises, these VERY affordable books are quickly becoming a must-have resource for all primer and level 1 piano students.
While they get rave reviews from teachers, parents love them too! Seeing their children doing daily activities in a piano homework book is a visual reminder that piano lessons are well worth the money.
