Printable Timed Tests For Teen Piano Students – Key Signature Set 1

Timed tests, whether in math or music, are an effective tool for developing fluency. If we want our piano students to be able to tackle increasingly-complicated pieces of music, they can’t spend time sweating the small stuff that they should already know by heart.

It’s as simple as that… some skills just need to be memorized.

But there’s a problem with timed tests: they make students anxious. And because of this, many math and music teachers have abandoned them.

I say, “Wait! Instead of getting rid of timed tests, let’s just get rid of the anxiety around them.”

Timed tests make students anxious because they are completed around peers who might see how slow they are, or because they have to achieve a certain time or their grades will suffer.

Eliminate those two aspects and you eliminate the anxiety without eliminating timed tests.

So, in today’s post, we’re sharing timed tests for your teen piano students. We’ll also tell you how to present them to your teens in a way that eliminates any and all anxiety.

How To Make Timed Piano Tests Work For Your Teens

Below you will find our first set of timed piano tests for teen students. This set of three printables reinforces key signatures teens will encounter in early intermediate books.

For an anxiety-free, timed test experience, send home multiple copies of a single test with your students to complete at home… in private… where only they know their time.

Encourage them to repeat the same timed test throughout the week in attempt to better their previous time. When they return to lessons the following week, ask your teens if they enjoyed their timed tests. Ask your teens if they were able to better their times as the week progressed.

Do not ask them for their time. It doesn’t matter anyway!
