Piano teaching can be a lonely profession. While it can be entertaining to discuss Star Wars, hamsters and Pokemon with 7-year-olds, by the fifth hour of a teaching day, the entertainment value has plummeted. Fortunately, you can smile knowing that the Teach Piano Today community “gets you”.
All piano teachers experience the same frustrations, triumphs, “side-eye moments” and laugh-out-loud occasions. And while you can’t poke your head over a cubicle or meet up at the water cooler, you can have a good laugh with your online friends.
And today we’re here to bring you those laughs with some social media shareables that your musical friends will appreciate. Have a chuckle to yourself as you read them, post them on your social media pages to share the giggles, or print them out and hang them in your studio to give your students a laugh (while hopefully eliminating some bad piano habits in the process).
The Memes That Capture “Life As A Piano Teacher”
We’re coming up on Blue Monday and, statistically, you’re supposed to be feeling kinda “down”. But because Trevor and I are the professors of piano happiness, we just can’t bear to think of anyone in our lovely community experiencing anything but fist-pumping happiness! And so, to blast away the Blue Monday Blues, today we have a lighthearted post of “shared experience” piano memes.
Every single profession has its ups and downs… and aren’t we fortunate to be in a profession where it’s mostly ups?! Make the most of the “downs” by having a good laugh with your friends and students over these memes, and maybe (just maybe!) that laugh will be memorable enough to eliminate some of these typical “piano teacher problems”. Note: To use these memes, right-click on an image and select “Save Image As” or on a device, just press your finger ot the image and hold.
So, let’s get this “Meme Party” started…
1. The Key Signature Meme
How many times have you smiled nicely and said, “Ooops! Don’t forget the G sharp!” as your student makes her first foray into the key of A major? Old habits die hard… unless you post this meme on the wall above your piano!
2. The “Noodling While I’m Talking” Meme
We once asked on Facebook what a piano teacher’s biggest pet peeve was – and the majority answered with a resounding, “When students play while I’m trying to talk!” Whether you cover the keys to prevent this little frustration or just grin and bear it, this meme’s for you.
3. The “I Forgot My Books” Meme
While you likely have studio copies of most books, it’s always a bit of a hassle when your piano student arrives without her piano bag. Any loose printables you hand her are guaranteed to end up on the floor of a minivan and any practice notes are likely to be forgotten. So, post this meme in your studio as a memorable reminder to bring those books!
4. The “Typical Week” Meme
Do you start off your week full of ideas, lesson plans, new activities, and energy… and come Friday, you’re completely exhausted and your studio looks as though you run a daycare for wildebeests? This one’s for you!
5. The “Choose A Sticker” Meme
The #1 priority of any young piano student seems to be picking just the right sticker. And, if given a big selection to choose from… well, you may just be there forever!
A Community Where We “Get” You!
Did some of these memes hit close to home? That’s because we totally “get” you! If you think you’d benefit from regular interactions with fellow-minded piano teachers then a happy place to be on the internet is in our WunderKeys Facebook groups.
You’ll find close to 6500 teachers discussing the ins and outs of teaching “under 10’s” in our WunderKeys For Piano Teachers Group and over 3200 teachers sharing advice and resources for teaching teens and adults in the WunderKeys Teen Group. Our groups are drama-free, supportive environments where you can share, learn, grow and lift up the piano teaching community as a whole!
We’d love to have you π
