Andrea and I don’t have a drop of Irish blood in our veins but lots of what we compose comes out with a Celtic flair.
Maybe our inner desire to be Irish after spending a summer in Ireland reveals itself in our music 🙂
Regardless, we are grateful for the influence and, as St. Patrick’s Day approaches, want to pay tribute by sharing a teen piano piece inspired by the traditional tune Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ral.
In contrast to the emotional, heroic sounds of many of our Celtic compositions, today’s Intermediate Level 1 piano solo is a soft, light-hearted and cheerful tune.

Set in the key of G major, Over In Killarney explores 6/8 time with a modern take on a Celtic lullaby. In this piece, your students will work to improve their comfort with leaping to the 6th and landing on the three finger, and then applying this skill as a tool to access the top of the one-octave scale.
With its lilting nature and sweeping phrases, Over In Killarney is filled with dynamic contrast that will enhance your students’ ability to play with expression.
Additional teaching points in this piece include first and second endings, tenuto markings, inner LH voicing, fermata markings, and parallel 6ths.
This piano piece can be used as a “Quick Learn” for Intermediate Level 1 students or as a challenge piece for late Level 2B students. In either case, the chance to practice hand balance and expression with this gentle solo will bring some sweetness to your March lessons.
