While stargazing on the trampoline with our daughters the other night, the “light of the moon” inspired me to rework Clair de Lune for teens.
I love creating classical pop piano pieces but with all of our efforts this past month focused on an upcoming book release, Debussy has had to wait.
Composed for students working toward the end of an elementary level 2B piano book, today’s piano solo can serve as a challenge piece for some students or as an easy “get back to the piano” piece for others.

Clair de Lune For Classical Pop Piano
Our classical pop take on Clair de Lune for teens will surely win over your older students, but just in case some need a little more convincing…
Did you know that, in the movie Twilight, Clair de Lune is playing on Edward’s sound system when Bella hits play?
Tell your teens that little tidbit of information and, not only will you be instantly cooler, but your students will be glued to the piano 🙂
And, while they are glued to the piano, some serious technical work will be taking place.
Today’s piano solo is composed in the key of C major, using pop chords in the left hand. We specifically selected pop chords as they lend themselves to a unique left-hand pattern used in this tune that introduces inner voicing.
With that said, it is a very, very early introduction to inner voicing. Specifically, in this piece, the LH 5 holds the root of the chord while the thumb works independently on the top note.
While it seems simple to accomplish with LH only, this introduction to voicing creates a coordination challenge when playing hands together.
As your students explore this challenge, they will experience the thicker texture and increased melodic variety that comes with creating an inner voice.

Thanks!!!
We hope you enjoy teaching it 🙂
Thanks so much Andrea. My student is ordering the older beginners books from Amazon. She has excellent ear and rhythm and some note reading skills from lessons at school. This will make a great addition when she is ready!
I taught my teenage autistic student this piece. It was the first time she was able to achieve a piece at this level, without frustration. I attribute that to the melodic patterns as well as use of 5ths in the LH. She performed this at my recital! A proud moment for both of us! Please continue to expand your curriculum!!
Oh I’m so glad to hear it was a success for her 🙂 She may be interested in our Level 2 method books if she likes this style. https://wunderkeys.com/piano-books-music/#pianostudentworkbooks
One of my students performed this at our Christmas recital, and multiple students asked to learn it afterwards ❤️
Thanks so much, it looks amazing!
