Note reading is important; no teacher will deny that. But as piano students move from primer books to level 1 books, intervallic reading becomes just as important.

Kids who can read notes but not intervals hit a huge roadblock as pieces become more complicated and the sheer number of notes increases. These note-crunching students can become slow robotic players who are easily frustrated.

Effective intervallic readers, on the other hand, look for the relationship between notes and no longer require a note-by-note approach to playing music. In turn, they are more efficient, fluent piano players.
